In complete contrast to Jab Jab, Pretty Mas is the part of Carnival more people are familiar with. Feathers, sequins, glitter, and skimpy outfits abound. I love that Grenada doesn’t discriminate against age, size, shape, gender… It’s all out there. Here’s a pictorial look at Pretty Mas.
I put the pictures in a photo gallery for quicker viewing. Just click on any picture you’d like to see better. There are a few very short videos I took that show three different dances performed in the parade below the pictures.
Here are a few short videos I shot.
I like to call that one the foot stomp. Haha!
I apologize for the whining video being out of focus. I couldn’t tell when I was shooting it, but it still shows the dance I keep talking about.
So different from the others, the Gouyave troupe included dancers of all ages. The little boys were so cute!
The Grenada Pretty Mas wasn’t as glamorous as the St Maarten Carnival parade, but it was certainly more inclusive. I loved that you found young and old locals and cruisers all having a great time together. The day was sunny, hot and humid until the end. Just as the parade ended by the Tropicana judging station, the skies opened up and drenched everyone. I thought the parade was over, but they had other judging stations to go to. I hope the worst of the rain missed them. What a great time. I’m so glad we made it to Carnival this year. We will have to look for more Carnival locations as we go west!
