Dave and I woke up with the sun, as we usually do now. But this morning there is an excited anticipation. We need to meet the park rangers on the Warderic Wells dinghy dock at 8:30 to go on patrol of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park!
Ranger Ken and an armed guard from the Bahamas Defense Force met us at the dock and we boarded their Park Warden speedboat. That thing flew! We patrolled the entire park in the time it would take us to get from one island across the pass to another island. Okay, maybe a little longer than that, but not much.
Ranger Ken was super nice and narrated a tour as he worked. He showed us Tyler Perry’s island, Johnny Depp’s island, some comedian named Sandy something’s island, an island owned by a Russian that was busted for scamming people and laundering money, a plane wreck on an island, and some resorts located on other private islands. We had no idea so many Bahamian islands were privately owned.
After finishing up at the southern park boundary, Ranger Ken took us over to Compass Cay and introduced us to Jamal, Tucker’s son. Tucker owns the island and built everything on it himself. Tucker is very environmentally conscious and doesn’t allow fishing or lobstering. Food scraps go in the water, which attracts the nurse sharks – whom they have adopted as pets. These sharks are mild mannered and well fed, so people can pet them from the docks or jump right in and swim with them. Pretty amazing! I can’t wait to show mom!
Jamal, Tucker Rolle’s son (Tucker owns the island), must have won a bet, because he drank a bottle of champagne after the Super Bowl and wanted us to take a picture to show Henry, the park ranger that hosted the party in Warderic Wells.
We returned to Warderic Wells after having thoroughly enjoying our morning on patrol. We hope to return the favor and maybe have Ranger Ken on the boat for dinner.
