Our home sweet home on the water is safe and sound thanks to Denise Simpson at Safe Yachts. I just wanted to share our experience with Safe Yachts with other cruisers that may need to leave their boats in Grenada…
It’s always good to be home. We were on land for over 6 weeks. During which time we heard about a spate of boat burglaries. This was my biggest fear about leaving the boat vacant in the water for an extended period of time. Granted the burglaries happened in Mt Hartman Bay (where we usually stay) and our boat was in Prickly Bay, but crime can happen anywhere. Also, our boat has some complex systems that throw temper tantrums if we do not run them regularly; the touchiest being the Spectra watermaker. So while we were away, we had our concerns.
We hired Denise Simpson at Safe Yachts to keep our boat on her mooring ball and watch over it, air the boat out, and run its systems. She also provided us with dinghy transportation to and from the boat and arranged the taxis to take us to and from the airport. This all worked like clockwork — even with our six sizable pieces of luggage we returned with. Oh boy! When you leave your boat in someone else’s hands, you go on blind faith that everything will be taken care of. This wasn’t so with Denise. We hired her to visit our boat once a week and received an email detailing what she did/saw each time. Denise also provided a patrol service twice a day to ensure her security.
Here is a sample report we received:
I did my weekly check on her this morning and got her bottom cleaned, so all nice and clean underneath and on the waterline, which is a bit low as I think she is slightly overweight! I think on your next haul out you could raise the waterline by 2 inches, it will save it looking like mine does as Nauti Cat is also rather heavily loaded down!!!
I checked out the stain from the squid ink and it has faded a lot since last week, so I don’t think you should worry about it, perhaps a dab of bleach may do the trick? I found another squid on the back sugar scoop, so they are being hunted big time!
Her volts were 13.21, 28.6A, port fresh water just under 3/4, stb water just over 1/4 – spectra says “flush timer interval 69.25 so working 100%, diesel is just below full, I ran both engines for 5 mins and amps plus temp 100%, both bilges were dry, I washed down all of the floors, aired her for an hour so she is ready and waiting for your return tomorrow.
Joe will come and pick you up tomorrow night and I will sort out the bill with him, so see you at the dock say 8pm (Joe phones me from the airport when he has you in the taxi).
I have really enjoyed looking after her, she is one of my favourites for sure 🙂

So we had a couple issues while we were gone: Livin’ Life was attacked by a squid that inked all over her side (including on the new window shades we had made in St Martin) and the Spectra watermaker stopped working (surprise!). Denise was all over both immediately. She tried to figure out the watermaker but called in a professional when she couldn’t resolve the issue. What happened: We left the solar and wind generator working but the only draw was the trickle to the watermaker. So we overcharged our batteries (oops!) and the high voltage messed up the watermaker. Sorry, that’s as technical as I get. Denise solved the overcharging problem by turning on the refrigerators and even loaded them with drinks. This was nice as we returned to cold drinks! The watermaker was reset and the 5 day flush resumed. We put the watermaker on 5 day flush to keep the seals and membrane lubed, since we had such problems before as a result of pickling it. Denise also removed the poor squids and cleaned up the ink stain as best she could. Thank you, Denise! Livin’ Life smelled a bit musty when we returned, since she was closed up so much of the time in the Grenadian humidity, but there were no signs of mold. Oh, Denise also noticed that we have a couple small leaks in hatches, so we will need to get those taken care of.
In other words, she did a great job and the boat was in wonderful condition when we returned. We couldn’t be happier with her service. By using her, we also avoided the expense and structural stress of hauling out our catamaran and storing it on land. All kinds of problems can arise from this, such as ant and mosquito infestations. We highly recommend Safe Yachts and would definitely use Denise again!
