Ah, life on a boat. Today was supposed to be our last day in St Maarten, but the wind is still blowing hard and, worse yet, the waves are big and nasty. So we needed to go to customs and immigration this morning to try to extend our stay for three more days – when Chris Parker says the wind and waves will calm down some. However, now that we have the wind generator and watermaker fixed (it has been making water for three days now), the starboard head stopped draining. Dave took it like a champ and started disassembling the system and cleaning and/or replacing parts. The boat has smelled of raw sewage all day. Disgusting! Definitely a blue job! We had a spare hose with which Dave replaced the outgoing hose to sea.
While Dave worked on the head, I tried to breathe shallowly and researched flights for the Rickshaw Run from Alaska to India and India to Grenada. Booking them like that, the trip would cost over $16,000 for both of us! So I had to work the system and try different destinations as separate legs. The best I found was flying all one-way flights from Alaska to Chicago then to India and India to Miami then to Grenada. I cut the cost to ¼ the amount. Still expensive, but come on… Who has ever flown from Alaska to India? Or India to Grenada? We just don’t do things like normal people. At least I finally got it all coordinated and booked. We are set to go to India!!! Woohoo!
The Y-valve was all mucked up, so he cleaned it and replaced some of the parts. Then he put it all back together and flushed all the nastiness out of the bilge with fresh water. He tested it out and it still wouldn’t drain whether he tried the output to sea or tank. He kept tinkering, but finally admitted defeat. I put out a general call on the VHF to see if anyone knew a plumber, but received no response. So I called Island Water World to see if they could recommend someone. Rhona gave me a number for Roger and I called him up. He said he could come tomorrow morning, but didn’t take down any of our boat information. He said he’d get in touch with Rhona at 8:00 tomorrow morning. I don’t know what good that will do, since Rhona has no idea who or where we are. Huh. I guess we should go to Island Water World in the morning and see if we can find Rhona. We’ll see what happens. But for now, Dave better get cleaned up so we can go make sure we stay legal!
