Position: Captain, Taste-Tester, Mechanic, Navigator, Chief Developer, Technology Guru, and Dive Master.
David grew up in a very small home (800 square ft house) on the outskirts of Baltimore, Maryland. After getting in a lot of trouble during his elementary school years, his parents thought it was necessary to enroll him in private education, probably one of the best decisions his parents ever made.
In 1992, David graduated from Cardinal Gibbons School (no longer in existence) and decided to continue his education at Frostburg State University. After a ton of crazy partying (with crazy stories you don’t want to know) and barely surviving on many occasions, he finally graduated in Computer Science in 1996.
On a cold December day in 1996, David moved to California. While working at a small company, he met his wonderful wife and life long cruising partner, Janice. Over the course of the past 15+ years, he has worked on many amazing technology products including websites such as evite.com, gifts.com, americanidol.com, ea.com and bn.com.
In 2005, David had a major surgery due to a disease called Ulcerative Colitis and had his large intestine removed. While the surgeries were physically demanding on Janice and himself, it truly made him reflect on his life and found that life is way more important than the next big house or fancy car. The surgery was life-changing and opened up many new possibilities.
Fast-forward to 2011, David landed an amazing job at Barnes & Noble that not only moved Janice and David to New York City and San Francisco but also gave them the opportunity to start learning how to sail. David always had the dream of “Sailing Around The World,” but it started to become a reality when they started taking sailing lessons on the Hudson River, right in front of the Statue of Liberty.
David and Janice have prepared a lot for their new adventure such as reading books / blogs, chartering many types of boats (monohulls & catamarans) in some amazing places, and watching tons of documentaries and how-to videos to educate them on the “cruising life”.
Position: First Mate (or Admiral, depending on who you ask, and Navigation Correction Specialist), Galley Cook, Chief Blogger, and Chief Photographer.
Born and raised in Southern California, Janice grew up hanging out at the beach and swimming in the ocean. Some summers were spent in Alaska visiting her grandparents, Leo and Edna Rollins. Here, Janice became accustomed to small boats (albeit power) on moody waters and loved to go deep sea fishing for halibut.
Janice became a single mother at 22 and moved around a lot, for which she will never be forgiven by her son, Devan, whom so far has moved around a lot on his own. Fortunately, they met Dave, got married, and still moved around a lot. Perhaps, it should have been a natural move to live aboard, but that was an option Janice had never considered.
Janice loves being outdoors and determined to change her career path from business administration to wildlife management. She completed her BA at UCLA in 2011. Then immediately moved to New York. Lacking wildlife management opportunities in the big city, she continued on to graduate school and received her MS in Environmental Policy and Management with a concentration in Fish and Wildlife Management in 2014.
Armed with her new degrees, Janice is ready for sailing adventures to new countries where she can volunteer on wildlife and humanitarian projects and work on building her resume’ until she can find paid positions on conservation projects around the world. Janice looks forward to starting a new and rewarding career where she can work towards making the world a better place.
