The morning greeted us way too early. There was still so much to do, but I just wanted to snuggle up in bed a little longer. However, there was a car to load, laundry to do, last minute packing and cleaning, and Gizmo to move to his grandma’s house. After a rough start (that required three trips to Mom’s), we hit the road. Leaving was the hardest part. We didn’t get everything done, but we have a rough time schedule to keep to, so we just had to call it quits and go.
Our first 365 miles took around 7 hours. Leaving on the last day of a holiday weekend probably wasn’t the best planning. The trip down the mountain from Big Bear was great, but things really slowed down as we neared Phoenix and caught up with the holiday traffic. The good news is that we averaged well over 50 mpg even with the car loaded down. Nice!
Our friend, Brad, offered up his house for us to stay the night. I wasn’t too keen on stopping already, after a supposedly 5 1/2 hour drive. However, we were beat from the last minute rush and going nonstop ever since Dave went on sabbatical. Besides, it was already dark when we arrived, we were starving, and Brad’s place is pretty nice (and FREE!).
We have been on our cruiser’s budget since Dave stopped working and are staying in the black. Having friends like this really helps. So after a good night’s rest and maybe a little sight seeing, we can get a fresh start tomorrow and put some miles behind us. Next stop will be El Paso or San Antonio, Texas.
