Yes! A boiling lake! Dominica has 7 potentially active volcanoes and in the south end there is a lake of volcanically heated water that is so hot you can boil an egg in it. However, the sulphur in the water will turn the egg black. It is still edible if you can get past the idea of peeling off a back shell. Considered the ultimate hike in the Caribbean, Dave has been dying to go. Fortunately, Francois and Vanessa from Why Knot IV and Richard and Estelle from Bella Stella are hikers and were willing to go with him so I didn’t have to. Dominica almost killed me once (slight exaggeration) and I didn’t want to give it another chance.
Richard somehow found the time and ability to take pictures and video during this extremely rigorous hike. Kudos to him. Everyone was soaked the entire day and Richard had protected his phone/camera in plastic which causes some of the haziness and blotches in the pictures. It rained all day, so the mist in the pictures and videos could be coming from the sky or the ground (steam). Speaking of wrapped in plastic, Estelle is modeling the look of the day, above: the trash bag outer wear.
Since I did not go on the hike, again the best way to tell the story is to show the pictures. They are probably not in any logical order, but they will give you an excellent idea of what they had to do to complete this hike. I heard a rumor there were tears shed before the end. Trust me, if I had gone there would have been a lot of tears shed!!!
So, after seeing all this, what do you think? Are they nuts or what? All I can say is that I am so glad I didn’t go! Would you?
